Blockstream Restores Multisig Accounts in Its Bitcoin App
Update Details
Two multisig account options are now available again in the Blockstream app after the update on Oct. 13, 2026. Blockstream said multisig accounts went live in its Blockstream app again on that date per its blog post. Users can create a two-key 2FA Protected account or a two-of-three account for Bitcoin that adds a backup key only the user holds.
Account Features
A 2FA Protected account pairs a device key secured by PIN with a key on Blockstream’s servers secured by two-factor authentication. Users sign off on sends with an authenticator app, email, SMS or a phone call. Each deposit starts a timelock after which the device key alone can spend it. An open-source tool aids recovery.
Two-of-Three Setup
The two-of-three account’s 2FA never expires. The backup phrase plus device key can recover funds at once. Both account types work on Bitcoin while the two-of-three option is not yet on Liquid. Holders of legacy multisig accounts see no change and face no migration.
Hardware Integration
Users can keep their own key on a Blockstream Jade which pairs with the app. Blockstream plans to build recovery-tool features directly into the app. Blockstream said on Oct. 13 2026 that multisig accounts are back in its Blockstream app with two-key and two-of-three options for Bitcoin.
User Experience
The changes allow existing account holders to continue without any required steps. The two account types give options for different security preferences while keeping the process tied to the app interface. Blockstream continues to support Bitcoin through these restored features.
Recovery Process
Recovery remains supported through the open-source tool for the 2FA Protected accounts. The two-of-three accounts allow immediate recovery with the backup phrase and device key. No migration affects prior multisig users.
Future Plans
Blockstream plans to add more recovery-tool features inside the app itself. Both account types remain focused on Bitcoin support at this stage. The two-of-three option stays limited to Bitcoin for now.
Key Security
Device keys and server keys combine for added protection in the two-key setup. Users manage their own backup elements in the two-of-three setup. Blockstream does not hold sole control over funds in these configurations.
