Lightning Labs on Oct. 15, 2026 introduced LayerTree, a design that lets many bitcoin users share a single output and leave at any time. NFA.

Announcement Details

Lightning Labs introduced its LayerTree design on Oct. 15, 2026 through an X post. The post described the design as a non-custodial bitcoin scaling solution that connects to Lightning. The announcement focused on the technical structure rather than any immediate deployment.

Shared Output Structure

Per the LayerTree site the design lets many people share a single bitcoin output. Ownership is recorded off-chain in a tree where each member’s balance is a leaf. The shared output commits to the root of that tree. This setup forms the core of how balances are tracked without moving the output on-chain for every change.

Covenant Mechanics

Each spend must satisfy a covenant script. The script checks a proof against the root and then recreates the output under a new root. The process keeps the shared output intact while updating the recorded balances. The site explains that this covenant approach maintains the single output across multiple users.

Exit Process

Any member can leave at any time in a single transaction. The exit requires no timelock and carries no expiry date. The LayerTree site and the X post both state that this flexibility allows users to exit whenever they choose without waiting periods.

Operator Limits

The operator who runs the tree cannot take anyone’s money. The operator also cannot stop anyone from leaving. The site makes clear that these restrictions protect user funds even though an operator manages the tree setup.

Receiving and Payments

Users do not need to be online to receive. Funds never time out according to the X post. Members can pay each other with vouchers and channel leaves. The site adds that receiving can occur over Lightning as well. These features aim to keep the system usable without constant online presence.

Joining Requirements

Joining needs the operator’s signature. Members can be added in bulk per the site description. This process allows groups to enter the tree structure through the operator while maintaining the shared output model.

Current Status

None of it runs on Bitcoin yet. The scripts use proposed opcodes that are not activated according to the site. The design exists as a proposal that depends on future opcode activation. The X post and site both note this limitation without providing an activation timeline.

Summary of Features

The LayerTree design centers on a shared bitcoin output with off-chain ownership tracking. Covenant scripts enforce the rules for spends. Any user retains the ability to exit freely. The operator holds no power over funds or exits. Connections to Lightning allow payments and receipts without requiring users to stay online. All of these elements remain dependent on opcodes that have not yet been activated on Bitcoin.
