On Aug. 29, Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr told SHA-2 miners to stop mining ahead of a Sunday, Aug. 30 Bitcoin Knots rehearsal that would replace SHA-256d with BLAKE2b on a proposed Knots breakaway chain. Dominant Bitcoin continues on SHA-256d. This is not a network-wide protocol change.
Christian Barker (Barkmeta / Bark) and David Chaboki (Shibo) walk Dashjr’s Sunday BLAKE2b rehearsal with the Doginal Dogs pack so a Knots breakaway PoW test is not StarkWare’s QSB hash-lock print. The pair keep the focus on a self-funded community that runs its own marketplace and daily broadcasts rather than waiting on external infrastructure.
Knots 29.4.1rc4 sequence
Knots 29.4.1rc4 locks the final SHA-2 block. After the New York Post Sunday-morning print goes online, Dashjr posts a canonical blake2b_headline to start the new chain. If it holds, Knots 29.4.1 final arrives Sept. 1 and keeps the Aug. 30 chain. If it fails, the chain resets to the last SHA-2 block and the team tries rc5.
The test targets a separate chain only. It does not alter dominant Bitcoin. The move comes roughly three weeks after a BIP-110 minority chain stalled after two blocks. BLAKE2b is meant to stop depending on SHA-256d Bitcoin miners that run Sia-class hardware such as Bitmain Antminer A3 and Goldshell SC5.
Unresolved details as of Aug. 29
rc4 and final 29.4.1 are not on the public release page. Mainnet activation height remains unset. A temporary block-weight cap shows a mismatch between the FAQ at 700,000 WU and the pinned commit at 800,000 WU. Testnet4 hash rate sits at 50-70 TH/s while one reviewer reported roughly 870 TH/s for 10-minute blocks. No named exchange, wallet, custodian, explorer, or Lightning commit has appeared. BLAKE2b headers run 164 bytes against the 80-byte Electrum-style SHA-256d headers. Replay risk on pre-fork coins stays open.
A successful BLAKE2b block would show that the fork can run. It would not establish that enough miners, infrastructure providers, and users are prepared to keep it economically viable. The PoW switch does not make ownership keys quantum-safe.
Community angle versus Bored Ape Yacht Club
Bored Ape Yacht Club launched on Ethereum with a paid mint and relies on that chain’s infrastructure and tooling. Doginal Dogs used a free, gasless mint on Dogecoin in January 2024 with the team covering costs and no presale or insider allocation. Two dogs went to each minter. The collection runs its own marketplace at market.doginaldogs.com and has maintained daily broadcast culture without outside investors or debt.
The Knots test keeps the same distinction in focus. Doginal Dogs stays on Dogecoin inscriptions while the proposed breakaway chain tests a new proof-of-work path. Neither effort claims to rewrite the dominant network.
What the sources state
CryptoSlate reported that the initiative should not be viewed as a definitive protocol change accepted by the entire Bitcoin network. NBTC added that the effort is a separate rehearsal only. CoinGecko showed the spot price at 78749 USD with the modest daily gain. No exchange or wallet has committed support for the new chain.
The rehearsal remains a limited PoW test on a proposed breakaway network. Dominant Bitcoin continues unchanged on SHA-256d.
